Ask for the relevant licence, not a general badge

SOCPA publishes a licensing route for accounting services. That route does not make every accounting-services provider a financial statement auditor. Ask to verify the licence relevant to the engagement you are considering.

SOCPA has warned against advertising “financial statement certification” or “audit” in a way that implies a right to practise without the necessary licence. An intermediary's statement that someone else will help is not enough: ask for the professional provider to be named and its responsibility defined in the engagement.

Do not assume the bookkeeper will also be the auditor

The Companies Law requires auditor independence and restricts combining audit with technical, administrative or advisory work for the company except as permitted by the regulations. Request an independence assessment before combining accounts preparation and audit with the same provider. Membership of a partner network does not establish that conflicts are absent.

Separate your operational need from the legal assessment

Wanting organized books does not automatically mean an auditor must be appointed. The Companies Law includes cases where the appointment requirement does not apply, subject to conditions and exceptions. The company's circumstances need assessment rather than a blanket conclusion based only on its size or name.

For a practical comparison, ask the proposal to identify who prepares documents, who audits the statements, who issues the report and how unresolved points are handled. Do not equate a system diagnostic report with an independent auditor's report.
